Now, I’m a boy. As such, I like sports (appologies to Brian Jensen here). The thing is, my whacked out brain likes sports in a sort of, well, whacked out way. Like, the sort of way that makes me wonder if anyone else remembers Ron Brown, when he used to play for the (then L.A. Rams). See, other than being a quite servicable kick returner, he also had this weird uniform.
Now, anyone who follows the NFL has probably seen the Dever Broncos and Mike Anderson’s jersey. See, Mike Anderson’s jersey says, well, it says “Mike Anderson”. Which is sorta weird, given that usually just the surname is shown. But Anderson being a relatively common name, (and apparently especially common on the Broncos) perhaps he requested the full deal on there.
What makes Ron Brown’s jersey so interesting isn’t that it said “Ron Brown”, although that is sorta weird. It’s that it said Ron Brown with the Ron on top of the Brown. Like, the “Ron” was practically scrunched into the guy’s neck.
Does anyone else remember this? Am I the only one? Is Mr. Brown’s wonky jersey going to be lost forever?
Does anyone remember when Amani Toomer actually ran a double reverse for the University of Michigan against Colorado in the Kordell Stewart “hail-mary” game? Gregg Easterbrook, who’s been mentioned here before for, among other things, hating Jews, used to bitch and moan how commentators usually mislabel the “reverse”, when it is, in fact, merely an “end-around”. That being the case, they also tend to call a [real] reverse a “double reverse”. So you can imagine how rare “actual” double-reverses are. Well, Toomer ran one. I think he may have even scored.
Does anyone remember USC running back Mazio Royster? For no other reason than to hear Mel Kiper Jr. say “Mazio Royster” (trust me, that alone was worth the price of admission).
Does anyone remember that at one point it was considered a real advantage for former first-round pick Dan McGwire to be 6′8″? Apparently it was also a real disadvantage for him to be a completely incompetent quarterback. Hell, does anyone remember that San Diego State team that had Darnay Scott and Marshall Faulk on it? Or that Faulk had verbally commited to the University of Miami, but decided not to go there when they said they were going to make him a defensive back?
Does anyone remember when all the kickers in the NFL were foreigners with really weird names? Ali Haji-Sheikh? Rolf Benirschke? Tony Zendejas?
Does anyone remember when Pat Tabler was a much-heralded rookie, or that the Indians actually tried to build their offense — so much so as to build this raised extension to their center-field fence so he could rap doubles off of it — around freakin’ Alex Cole? (Although I’m sure our intrepid readers from Ohio know that all too well).
Does anyone remember when Rhoderick Rhodes was considered an equal highschool prospect to Jason Kidd (and that they were both, at one point, planning on going to Kentucky?)
What about Randolph Childress’ gutty performance in the ACC Championship game, outplaying teamate Tim Duncan?
Or that the original “fab five” was actually at North Carolina — not Michigan — before Cliff Rozier transfered to Louisville (I think). Heck, I’d settle for someone who remembers who Ray Jackson was (or remembers that that Michigan team also had a 7′0″ guy named Eric Riley who they’d play with both Juwon Howard and Chris Webber).
Does anyone remember who Constantine Popa was?
Okay, I’m sure a lot of people remember shit like that. Well, maybe not Constantine Popa, but the rest of ita ll. But where are they and why aren’t we screeming “Oh shit! I totally remember that!” over a pitcher of beer?

Congratulations. You’ve successfully excluded 98 percent of your readership.
I tease, but the truth is, I love that you’re such a dork about sports. Sort of like I am about spelling. Sadly, you’re much more of a chick magnet than I.
*sigh*

I remember the Ron Brown jersey, but not the rest. Sorry Jeremy, I’m only a fraction of the “whacked out” sports fan that you are. Can we still kick it?

Does anyone remember Shawn Scales? VT kick returner, if I remember correctly. The guy was from Woodbridge, VA. He had a tough up bringing. I read somewhere he attended FUMA and then was scouted by VT. He was amazing. Fast as all get out and such a personality. I never heard him making it to the Pros, but I think I read he played in Europe or Canada.

Hey, I was just remembering Constantine Popa as he lived across the hall from me while at FUMA back in ‘90-’91!!
Wow, this is hilarious, to run a google search.
Anyways, I was talking to some Rumanian friend here at work and decided to search. What happened to Popa after FUMA??
