My first post of 2006! Whoo hoo!
I know, I know. It’s been awhile. I’m sorry.
This isn’t going to turn into a sports-only blog – I promise – but there have been a lot of sports-related things going on. Actually, there have been a lot of other-related things going on as well, but in most cases I’ve been too drunk to remember those, so I guess we’ll stick with the sports.
In the coming days, we’ll cover my fantasy football victories, the Rose Bowl (or, “How the Entire South Part of California was Duped into Thinking this Year’s Team Was as Good as Last Year’s”) and, of course, playoff football in the NFL!
I don’t know exactly how I faired on the last week of the regular season, but hopefully with a strong playoff showing I can, as I’ve said, at least finish a game over .500.
On to the picks:
| Redskins at Buccaneers (-2.5) | |
|---|---|
|
Jeremy: Not to get all Bill Simmons on you, but no way am I taking Chris Simms in his first playoff start against a ‘Skins team that’s been on an absolute tear, regardless of my feelings on Mark Brunell. (And a special shout-out to Santana Moss for helping me win my “other” fantasy league. More on this later) But really…at least one road underdog has to cover this week, and there’s no reason why the Redskins can’t win outright. They’ll get hammered next week, but that’s neither here nor there. Pick: Redskins |
Favorite moment: The fact that Mark Rypien, a former Redskins quarterback, might be the ugliest man ever. Well, either him, or Kurt Warner’s wife. That old-school Bucs logo. Could it get any gayer? I mean, some pirate dude with a “dagger” in his mouth? Yeah. I’ll take two for Brokeback Mountain, thanks. |
| Jaguars at Patriots (-7.5) | |
|
Jeremy: No one likes this line. Over a touchdown? The Jags looked downright frisky this year! Although I can’t quite tell if Byron Leftwich coming back is a good thing or a bad thing, but I do like throwing to those tall Jags receivers. Regardless, I don’t think I can pick against the champs. Jack Del Rio looks like a nice guy, and a perfect fit for a city like Jacksonville, but c’mon…these are the Patriots we’re talking about. But who knows? Even though this current Jags squad isn’t playoff tested, you figure they can get within a touchdown, right? Against every instinct in my body, I say lay the points. But don’t get mad when I’m completely wrong. Pick: Patriots |
Favorite moment: Nothing. These people play in Jacksonville for christ’s sake. That old-school Patriots logo. I mean, could it get any gayer? A dude sitting there, waiting to “hike” the “ball”? Yeah. I’ll take two for “I’m a gay man and I like having gay sex with other gay men”, thanks. (I shudder to think what Google is going to do with this). |
| Steelers at Bengals (+3) | |
|
Jeremy: Um, a road dog? In the playoffs? Excuse me? You know, color me wacky, but I think the Bengals cover here. Sure, maybe they lose by a missed field goal or something, but I think they can win outright. We’ll get into this later, but Carson Palmer is the real deal (as opposed to our boy Matt Leinart) and I don’t know if I’m really sold on the Steelers secondary. Yes, Willie Parker is fast, and yes, everyone loves Big Ben, but sorry kids, gotta go with the Bengals. Pick: Bengals |
Favorite moment: The Tim Worley era. Boy that kid could fumble. The short-lived David Klingler era. The death-knell for the run and shoot. |
| Panthers at Giants (-2.5) | |
|
Jeremy: I really don’t know where to go with this one, but after seeing Tiki Barber seemingly just want it more than anyone else on the field, I gotta take the New York Football Giants here. The Panthers have been flying a little under everyone’s radar and all, but I just can’t take them against a solid – well, assuming the poised Eli Manning shows up – Giants team at home. And a special thanks to Steve Smith for helping me win my main fantasy league! Pick: Giants |
Favorite moment: The Panthers drafting Tshimanga Biakabutuka. A running back that’ll make you forget about Jarrod Bunch AND Ricky Powers. Phil McConkey. I mean, what the hell kind of name is that? Was “Phil MiNutz” taken or something? |

1. I’m really excited you finally updated! And. . .
2. All the gay references remind me of reading Neal. If you could somehow work in a lengthy description of how you eat cereal you’d be the coolest person ever. Cooler than Pete.
