Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth or “How I forgot the VMAs in three easy steps”

September 7th, 2006 · 1 Comment

So, exactly a week later, we’re hear discussing the VMAs. My take? I don’t really remember.

Honestly.

I didn’t catch large chunks of the show while I was there, and I obviously haven’t watched the thing on TV (although I don’t doubt it’s been on MTV nonstop since the show). Why is this? Two words:

Open bar.

Yeah. Now, nothing personal to any of you out there that actually like MTV, but if I have to pick between a free Grey Goose and tonic and T.I. (who?) it’s going to be the voddy, every time, and twice on Thursdays. Or perhaps more like seven or eight or ten times on Thursdays. You get the idea.

But regardless, it was a great time. We saw all sorts of famous people, including my personal hero, Matt Pinfield. The only thing that would have made the night complete is if him and that bald fat kid — you know, the one who always made the “sign of the beast” when he signed off his MTV news bits — dueled to the death. Or maybe not to the death. Maybe for the chance to interview Rob Zombie or something. Whatever.

Now, I know you guys were probably expecting some sort of lavish minute-by-minute recap, but I don’t really think that’s needed. Besides, my boy Sam turned me on to a better idea. See, Sam writes comedy for a syndication service that goes out to radio shows across the country. I’ve always had a special place in my heart for radio. My dad was an old radio guy, and my first job when I was 15 was in radio. It was totally a shit job, but I’ve been around radio forever, and it holds a certain romanticism for me. I even used to guest host for a friends public access show in highschool. Dare I say I was even good at it.

So Sam is trying to get this radio bit launched where he reviews something and gives “three points” on it. You can see his first attempt here, where he gives his three points on the Emmys (scroll down to the bottom and click the little “play” icon. It should play in your browser if you have Flash installed). And given that I’m not at all shy about biting other people’s style, I figured I’d give it a shot. But just as Sam likes writing in his “hack comic” voice, I figured I’d dust off my agro, alpha-male, idiot sports-talk radio voice and give it a go.

So without further ado, I give you: JeremyAbramson.com™ presents: Behind the Arc, wit’ ya boy Jigga.

(Just click the “play” button. It should play right in your browser)

Who knows, maybe there’s a future in radio for me after all.
