Can’t wait for the Sugar Ray version of “Say Something”

Now, we all loved Better than Ezra, right? I mean, “Whoa-oh, it was gooooood livin’ with you”. Great stuff. Okay, so “Desperately Wanting” was a little lame (especially that “when they pumped out your guts” part) but all in all, I think we can agree that Better than Ezra were easily the best and most influential band of the 90’s.

Okay, so not really. But that’s not the point. The point is where the hell do they get off covering James’ “Laid”? I mean, we all loved Ryan Adams doing “Wonderwall” and everything, but this…this…this abomination is just horrible.

And honestly, how old does that make me feel? A shitty band from my late-childhood is now covering an incredibly good song from my adolescence. And the song is now being played on, like, adult alternative radio.

But that’s the part I don’t get. See, adult alternative radio is, as best as I can tell, targeted at people in their early thirties. Or, to put it another way, the exact people who listened to “Laid” when it came out the first time. So how exactly does that work? What, do radio stations figure that their audience just somehow “forgot” that they’ve heard this song before?

I guess what makes me sad is that — at least according to the radio conglomerates — my taste in music is now officially so shitty, that listening to the [original] James version would be far too edgy. Apparently, I’m just so darn old and boring, I now prefer hearing one of the better songs of my youth sung by Better than fuckin’ Ezra.

I swear…if I turn on my radio in a year and hear Train doing a cover of “Jane Says”, I’m going to go postal on someone.
